Wouldn’t this Be a Great Time for a Scavenger Hunt?

It’s August, it’s hot and steamy and you’re running out of ideas to keep the family entertained while South Florida continues its efforts to slow the spread of coronavirus. Our children’s charity has been offering virtual programs over the past couple of months that we hope have helped. (We want to send a big thank you to everyone who made a charitable donation to make those programs possible!)

The Mommy Poppins website might be focused primarily on New York City, but you can find loads of fun activities and resources that can help you and the kids have fun here in Florida – despite Covid-19. One of our favorite suggestions is having a scavenger hunt!

As Ally Noel says on the site, “Scavenger hunts are one of those easy kid activities that are fun for the entire family. It’s a great brain break for at-home learning this year and a quick way to get everyone moving outdoors, but it’s also easy to turn into a fun indoor activity for kids on rainy days.”

How to Create a Family Scavenger Hunt

Mommy Poppins offers two free scavenger hunts that can help you get started. “The Indoor Scavenger Hunt will turn a dull afternoon into a treasure hunt,” they say. “The Outdoor Scavenger Hunt will have everyone asking for just ‘one more’ trip around the block.”

You can also print out their fill-in-the blank scavenger hunt and use it with a hunt you design yourself. Not sure what to fill in those blanks with? Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Send the kids out hunting for colors or creepy crawlies in nature.
  • Coordinate with other families in the neighborhood for a bigger hunt – and be sure to have prizes for the winners (and the runners up!).
  • You can let older kids search the virtual galleries of museums for treasure.

Whatever activities you decide to try, all of us there at Deliver the Dream, a charity that supports children and families dealing with the challenges associated with cancer, cystic fibrosis and countless other conditions, will be hoping you find treasure in the moments you share.
